Linux Vs Windows Hosting
Operating system (OS) used: Windows Web Hosting works on the Microsoft Windows Server operating system whereas Linux Web Hosting uses different flavors of the Linux operating system such as Red Hat, CentOS and Debian. However, the type of hosting you choose does not depend on which type of operating system (OS) is running on your computer. Even if you are using windows operating systems, you can still use Linux web hosting and vice versa.
Server access: The way you access your host server differs in Windows and Linux hosting. While FTP access (transferring files from hard drive to host server using the File Transfer Protocol) to your files is possible on both Windows and Linux, if you want Telnet or SSH access (accessing files directly on the web server without transferring to or from hard drive) then you can get that only on Linux hosting. Although it is possible to set up telnet access for your files on Windows OS, not many hosting companies allow or offer it. Instead, Dedicated Servers running MS Windows can be accessed through RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) or by using a virtual console provided by the Web Hosting company.
Stability and performance: It has often been seen that if there are a high number of processes running at the same time, then Linux handles such processes much better than Windows does. In other words, the stability of Windows seems to decrease more than the stability of Linux when multiple processes run together. Thus, while Linux may be able to get more from the server, it is also seen that the performance of a server has more to do with the expertise of its administrator and not so much with the kind of operating system used.
Cost effectiveness: Since Linux is an open source OS and is free to use, Linux hosting is often cheaper than Windows hosting. Also, there are a lot more hosting companies that provide Linux hosting than there are those who provide Windows hosting, which also makes Linux more competitive thus cost effective.
Features and languages supported: Different web features such as PHP, POP3, HTML, JavaScript, and MySQL are supported on Windows and Linux Web Hosts. However, Microsoft proprietary features such as ASP, .NET, FrontPage, MSSQL, Access, and Windows Streaming Media are mostly supported on Windows Web Hosts. While some of these features do have support on Linux, it is very limited and sometimes expensive to use.
Security: The common belief is that Windows servers are not as secure as Linux servers, mainly because the large number of users using windows operating systems. While that is often seen as the case, the security of the server also depends on your web hosting company and not just on the OS used. On the other hand, the Linux Operating System also has its share of security issues since its source code is available to the public (see Open Source).
